Double (or triple) duty: Multi-functional clothing

I’ve been watching my clothing budget a little more closely these days, so I’ve had my eye out for basics with maximum versatility. Turns out, convertible clothing has come a long way from the days of Units and Multiples (remember those mall stores that sold tube tops that could be worn as belts, skirts and dresses)? I was surprised at how stylish the options are in terms of clothing that can be worn a multitude of different ways.

Check out this basic white burnout tank top that can be worn as either a racerback or a deep V-back:

I’m loving this convertible collar jersey dress, which comes in neutrals like charcoal, black and chocolate. The neck line can be worn in a number of different ways: as a cowl, a capelet or an asymmetric drape. And you can’t beat the price at $38.

Victoria’s Secret definitely knows what it’s doing when it comes to multi-purpose items; their Biofit bra has been a big success. This convertible dress comes in a number of jewel tones in addition to black and white, and can be worn as a halter, strapless or one-shoulder look.

And if I were planning a vacation anytime soon, I would definitely invest in one of these do-anything black dresses. Backpacking trip limited to one bag? This basic North Face travel dress is comfortable and versatile. Wear as a skirt with a tee while sightseeing during the day, then convert to a dress and throw on a dramatic necklace or cuff and you’re set for a nice dinner at night. Then roll up, toss in your backpack, and it’s off to the next destination.

Tropical vacation at a nice all-inclusive resort? I’d consider this Karen Kane number that can be worn as either a maxi or a kicky shorter version with a blouson hem. Cute gladiator sandals and some funky jewelry, and you’re ready for anything the week throws at you.

Spring looks to be a bright time of year when it comes to fashion. The new color of spring is a very bright pink in various shades, known as fuschia, magenta, papaya, or bright coral, depending on what site you are viewing.
