Ideas for stylish Halloween costumes that double as investment pieces for fall.

I won’t be dressing up for Halloween this year — as a first-time parent, I’m more interested in watching the infant monkeys, ladybugs and penguins that will be populating our party. But if I were, I think I would go for a costume with some retro allure that would recapture a little of the magic of playing dress-up.

Which immediately rules out any adult Halloween costumes that include the word “sexy” in front of an otherwise respectable profession — so no naughty nurses, librarians or referees.

I love the idea of a gorgeous period costume….what a great way to try on the styles of a previous era. We’re seeing a lot of influences from the past in this year’s trends, so why not invest in a piece that will do double duty? You could go for a full-on flapper costume:

<img src="http://k4.stylefeeder.com/thumb/b5/18/b518524689bb2f3fbd62b5c8d4d6ed06ce1da984-200.jpg"/ alt="Silver Flapper Costume"/>

Or just splurge on one of this season’s dresses inspired by the roaring 20s. Add some pearls and a pair of Mary Janes for Halloween…and wear it again with modern accessories on a date or a night on the town!

<img src="http://k4.stylefeeder.com/thumb/b8/2e/b82e6daa08412118356f2a291c4186b8fb45bd56-200.jpg" border="0" height="200" width="200" / alt="Suede Flapper Dress"/>

Likewise, the 80s are making a fashion comeback. You could get decked out in an 80s costume worthy of Krystal Carrington:

<img src="http://k4.stylefeeder.com/thumb/91/72/9172d628cc687b0719d8a9d2711e34108036e5fc-200.jpg"/ alt="Soap Star 80s Costume"/>

Or you could take inspiration from that decade’s strong shoulders and neon brights to put together a wear-anytime look. How about a jacket or top with padded shoulders? Pair it with costume jewels, a bright blouse, a pencil skirt and a Joan Collins updo for All-Hollows Eve, then work the versatile piece into your regular fall and winter rotation.

What are you going to be for Halloween this year?

It looks easy enough to double wrap a strand of pearls around my wrists and layer on a bunch of necklaces and chains, but I fear that what looks very Les Fashionable on American Idol finalist (and Olsen twin doppelganger in this photo anyway), Ramiele Malubay, would look very Coco Chanel Halloween costume on me.
