Colored tights: How bold will you go?

Jackie has champagne tastes on a student budget. That’s why she keeps a close eye on celebrity trends, then scours fast fashion outlets to recreate the look for less.

Colored tights are suddenly stylish again–and I’m scared to death. My comfort zone lies distinctly in the realm of grays, blacks and the occasional–gasp–blue. I envy girls who pull off red and bright cobalt tights. I’m working up the nerve, but sometimes I still feel like a clown when I wear them.

For a style blog I started with my sister, I posted a picture in these teal DKNY tights:

(Above) That’s how they looked on me.

(Above) That’s how they look on the DKNY model.

A good source for colorful tights once you’ve worked up the nerve is We Love Colors. They have a bright blue pair I’ve been checking out.

Are you ready to try colorful tights yet? Have you come up with some great outfit/tights combinations? I’d love to see them!

  • I’ve got a pair of red ones that I often pair with a smart grey dress. They seem to work best when I pair them with something that’s only one colour.

  • I often wear coloured and patterned tights. The key is to make the colour the only bright part of the outfit…especially if you are unsure of it.

I have started to do the reverse. Wear grey, black, brown, white tights with bright coloured outfits. That is fun as well.

Hey Jackie…love the new blog with you and your sis… I always visit yours once a week and check out your outfits….

anyway, the only tights i can get away with is black and brown and maybe grey… but even thats pushing it a little. this weekend i paired black tights (classic), black peep toe ankle boots (trendy), and a really bold and colorful sweater dress… and thats as trendy as I can get

  • so, my question is, what’s the rule on wearing tights with open-toed shoes or sandals?? i tend to think that it’s ok if they’re fishnet-esque, but otherwise, the unseemly seam!!! and are bare legs still hotter than tights??? most guys i talk to hate when women wear tights…not that it should matter. i dress for my gfs regardless, but it’s a thought…

  • I love the idea of bright and fun tights! I used to have a lot of really cool ones – blue/grey argyle, green/blue argyle, b/w argyle + some super cool black ones with fun white swirls that I found in London years ago.
In the past few years I’ve become somewhat more conservative – black, brown, navy, dk green and dk burgundy.
HOWEVER, this year, I happened upon the site mentioned above and decided to rediscover my “roots.” I ordered scarlet, two checkerboard/diamond patterns (b/w & purp/black) and a green/blue tie dye. Shortish black skirts or a color shirt or shoe that either totally blends or super contrasts w/the tights I think is the way to go. (I also just purchased @ ebay, super cute purple fringe shortie boots.) Black boots are always cute.
My style is super eclectic/gypsy/mix&match/artsy, so, despite the fact that I’m not a kid, this look fits my life style and doesn’t really scare anyone when I wear unusual things.

  • PS: That was colored SKIRT, not shirt!

  • It is not so much coloured tights that we should be questioning…but how to wear them.
Keep your outfit simple, and your length short, and make the tights your statement. I think any bold coloured tights or patterned tights always look best either using a tone-on-tone technique, or pairing with a neutral colour ie: black, grey, navy or hmmmm… black.
I also think bold tights with a pump is best, as they help elongate the leg the most. A peep-toe can look super cute but make sure you do well to conceal the tights ‘toe seam’.
However when all is said and done, fashion is an expression of ones own character and personality, so wear them however you like and enjoy it! (*_*)

  • Wear with a neutral dress or skirt. but when wearing with a skirt, wear a top that that goes well with the colur of the tights. like cobalt blue tights with a grey skirt and a purple top.

  • For roughly the last 20 years, I’ve worn black with bright colored hosiery and turtlenecks. Unless it’s snowing, I’ll wear sandals, so yes, the toes show. It’s my ninja/ Middle-aged Goth look.

If the timidity still is a factor, try patterned tights for a start, and wear a coordinating (bright) pair of panties underneath. This way you can experiment with color. In short order you’ll find it’s easy to wear the color where it shows.

  • I guess I’m more conservative so I keep it to black, silvers, and shades of brown. I like to wear them with pumps and short skirts. Maybe I should venture into the coloreds? I know I’d shock the socks off many people coz where I come a lady wearing tights is gawked at.

Only one other person I know at work ( and we are over 1000) wears tights and even then we mostly wear theem when the weather is chilly.

But all the guys I know think its sooooooooo hot! So tights Vs bear leg? That’s a no brainer

Thanks for all the tips everyone!

I’m going to step out of my comfort zone and pair my bright tights with gray neutrals and when I do, you all will be the first to know. :)

@Tierra, thanks for the compliment about my blog! :) Love yours also.

  • I love colored tights! I’ve got about twenty different pairs, blue, red, purple, you name it. I think tights look very good with a winter skirt. I usually wear my blue ones with a almost-to-the-knee winter skirt and its ver pretty.

  • I love We Love Colors . I love how they have such a large selection of colors and patterns. They are good quality products which is hard to find. I always find myself looking for tights and then when I get them they tear because my nails chip easily. I would always pull my tights by mistake. Their microfiber tights are very durable.
