Think I wore the right dress to the wedding?

A blogger for fashion retailer Bluefly.com, Nana breaks down the biggest trends on the curb, the catwalk & the red carpet.

Thank you SO much for weighing in on my wedding wardrobe conundrum!! My cousin’s wedding was last week and I ended up going with something completely different from the Vera Wang gown and Betsey Johnson dress I was considering.

Pretty much my whole family decided to wear Ghanaian kente cloth – kinda like our family uniform for the day – and my sister (that’s her on the right in the blue kente) surprised me by having a one-shoulder kaba blouse and slinky maxi skirt sewn for me.

I loved the way it fit (the tight skirt gave me hips!) and I felt like flitting all over the dance floor thanks to the ruffled one shoulder strap. Here’s a full-length view (that’s me with my aunt…not the one who advised me to show off legs and shiny lips).

Ironically, my outfit ended up encapsulating the idea of both dresses I was considering. It was floor-length like the Vera Wang gown, but bright with a flirty flourish up top like the Betsey Johnson dress. Think I made the right decision?

  • It seems clear that the Ghanian theme best fits who you are as the culture you most want to express as that which makes you unique. I think you look great (your figure would make *anything* look great, by the way). If that theme did it for you, you made ABSOLUTELY the right choice, and no one else’s opinion really has anything to do with it. The wedding should reflect the taste and culture of the bride and groom– and the bride should have the last word on everything (within affordable reason)!

My family hosts African bar mitzvah celebrations for each of our children when they turn 13. We celebrate our Hebrew/Messianic heritage and culture in Scripture, dance, prayers, and background music, but do it up BIG with our African clothing, songs, music, and, of course, FOOD! G-d created all the colors, and the world is more beautiful for having every one of them in it.

  • I think you look stunning and I am glad to see something other than the usual gown. I believe if you know your culture, you should display your pride, and you all did so elegantly and happily. Kudos!

  • well well well…. it is definitely the best choice you made for the wedding… In my own opinion, wearing traditional attires encapsulates the whole idea of being unique because it is tailor-sewn and therefore you dont have to fret about the way you butt looks in it or your shoulder!!! I love the Ghanaian attire, Kente…looks like the Nigerian Batik or tie and dye called ADIRE….. if you have noticed, ANKARA is the new black dress in Nigerian weddings and occasions…..

    Keep it up, sis……
